Mentoring seems to be established as an effective tool to support professional development. The programs mostly follow the goal to connect mentors and mentees in a relationship, empower the mentee in its goals through the competence and experience sharing of the mentor.

I have been and am involved in different mentoring initiatives in my career, mainly in developing my entrepreneurial path. In different roles (Mentee, Mentor, Program Manager), I also had the opportunity to experience the various directions of mentoring programs. I was a mentee when I started my own consulting business, I was a mentor, when I engaged as business angel for early-stage start-ups and a program manager 10 years ago for “donna informatics” (Swiss Informatics Organisation) and now at Österreichischer Gewerbeverein. What I realised over the years: Mentoring ≠ Coaching.

Mentoring as well as coaching is only as powerful as the clearness of the goals. But from my own and broad experience, they are tools for different development. Coaching is powerful and should be on the “regular menu” of every entrepreneur. It allows to understand the current situation from a systemic, though holistic perspective.

Being an entrepreneur means to steadily move oin within a measurable field: make better, bigger, brighter, …. It can be overwhelming; this is when Mentoring steps in. Mentorship is about to become concrete, make goals real while getting the expert support needed.

Based on my personal experience and understanding, we from ÖGV, together with Dagmar Bachrich and Stephan Blahut, have developed a specific mentorship program. It is dedicated to entrepreneurs who are already established for 3 and more years and are now about to reach the next level.

What are the key ingredients of ÖGV Mentorship?

• A 9-month curriculum with clear goals set by the mentee

• We form tandems with Mentees, so they can cheer each other along this journey

• We offer workshops with 9 experts / Mentors from our network who deliver the knowledge and concrete answers to the questions of the Mentees.

We successfully launched this curriculum in 223 / 2024. We have 8 mentees, 6 mentors and the program was a perfect fit for the situations the mentees stood with their business.

Yes, it is a journey, but getting the support via mentorship makes it more enjoyable.
